How the numbers get here. Almost everything on this site comes out of one line of arithmetic — a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so at D inches deep it covers 324 ÷ D square feet — and that line is written out on every page that uses it. Where a figure is not arithmetic but a convention, such as the weight of a yard of gravel, it is given as a range and labelled as one. The editorial method page has the detail.
